END OF ACT I
Thursday, May 12, 2005

Sitting around last evening in an impromptu production meeting we found ourselves accessing where we stood as a production company or at least I did. It's been four years and we've progressively moved from miniDV, to DVCam all the way to HD. Our Star Wars parody film is making it's way across the internet and say what you will about it, like it or not you can't deny the great production values. We've always tried to pride ourselves on making everything look and feel as professional as possible. With 12 STEPS and EPISODE IV.V I think we will have achieved our highest level of quality. Both in story and picture.

This all lead me to believe we have reached a plateau and not a bad one but a plateau none the less. We are talking about 2 new possible projects and it's time we move everything to the next level. We've always done that in the past but this has got to be a much bigger leap. I'm not sure what that next level holds but after our last two projects we certainly can't go backwards or at least not intentionally. We are trying to wrap up all the short films, get them to DVD and get them out to sell.

The one exhibition format that has seemed to elude us is the film festival market. Let me rephrase that the film festivals that matter. There are a bizillion festivals out there and if you can get your film into any of them than it's only a plus for you and your film. But really the only festivals that matter are the ones where people in the "business" are going to see your work. Trust me David and I have a first festival story that will make you cringe but that'll be for another blog.

But the point is that when Kevin Smith first showed CLERKS it was basically to his cast, crew, family and friends, but it happened to be in New York and in a festival where at least one guy from Miramax would see his movie and get it to people who could make a difference. Had he showed his movie at the festival Dave and I first went to in L.A. he'd still be working at the Quick Stop.

Act I ends at the release of 12 STEPS in a couple of months and I think it's the perfect time to begin into Act II.
